SteamPunk Icons by burntheashes0 SteamPunk Icons by burntheashes0
Please look in Full View

:Edit: Here's a few more into the set I've been working on. Added are Mail, iPhoto, iTunes, & Address book.

-iPhoto-
I used a Template for a Preview icon made by :iconwillbook:
-Mail-
This one used a Mail Template from :iconralleria:
-System Preferences-
I used a pattern created by :iconaxertion: for the background. and a photoshop tutorial I found online here to create the gears.

The rest I built from the existing OS icons

Hope you enjoy and use them!

::ZIP file contains both the ico and icns files for Mac or Windows::

Any chance you would make icons for calendar, safari, word, or the app store?

Yea I could certainly put that on my todo list :) Although Safari, i've messed with a couple of times. and I can't seem to get it right. But all i can do is try right?

What would you suggest for each?

Well, you could do an old calendar, with the months and days arranged in a circle (I don't know how to describe it, I can just see it in my head) or even just a sundial (Yes, I know that's just for hours). I actually found some icons for the other three but am still looking for a Photobooth one. Perhaps just an old, curtained camera?

The calander would be hard if it was to function like the iCal one on the Mac. The way that it is set up to change the date, it may not work as a circle, but it could certainly try and change the paper and such, to make it look old and leathery

help the advanced computer stuff illiterate, please? How do replace the current icons for those you created?

I think they are spiffy and would like to see them on my dashboard.

Dashboard? or Dock? if it's your dock ( the little icon holder at the bottom of your screen on mac, then Nakila93 does a better job then I explaining how to change them. For each icon you want to change, such as the system prefrences, iPhoto, Mail etc.

1) In Finder, go to Applications, and then Ctrl-click (or right-click, if you have that turned on) on iPhoto’s icon, which looks like this.

2) Click “Show Package Contents.”
3) A new Finder window opens. Click Contents > Resources. Your current iPhoto icon will be located in this folder. Every program gives its icon a different name, so you’ll need to search for it, but Mac icons usually end in “.icns,” so just search for that term, and restrict your search to this “Resources” folder. It should come right up.
4) Make a backup of the current icon. I created an “icon backups” folder on my Desktop, and just dragged the current iPhoto icon file (which is named “NSApplicationIcon.icns”) into it.
5) In a separate Finder window, go to the new icon you want to switch to. Click on it, and then after a moment click on it again, and you’ll be able to change its name. Give the new file the same name as the original .icns file you’re replacing.
6) Drag the .icns file over into your iPhoto > Contents > Resources folder.
You’re done! You’ll probably need to restart your Mac to get the changes to show up, but that’s pretty much it. I had to click the icon after restarting, and it showed right up!

Another good way to do this with out having to be computer literate, is to get Candybar. it's free for a trial, but can help you change the icons.

Im glad you enjoy these I hope you can get them working.

MORE MORE! LOVE these so much!Would love to see Pages, Calendar, Safari, etc. ALL of them done this way! :D Really easy to change it too:

You’re done! You’ll probably need to restart your Mac to get the changes to show up, but that’s pretty much it. I had to click the icon after restarting, and it showed right up!

Do you have more of these yet?

Sorry for the delay in reply. I think an overall aesthetic would be my major suggestion. With Snow Leopard and Lion reducing colors and smoothing lines, the more baroque steam look needs cohesiveness to work. The iTunes icon looks too clean and artificial against the dirt patina of the Mail and Address Book.

Speaking of the Mail icon, it's probably my fave of the set. It looks like it was ripped off a Vernian envelope, which makes the keeping the stamp perhaps dissonant. Maybe a wax seal? It seems like your intention was to be ‘inspired by’ and keep very close to the original sources. Since the icons themselves are pretty clear on what they do, I don't think that's necessary.

A camera on a photo (and points for not making an ostentatious frame) is clear, and well done. Of all of them it stands alone the best.

The System Preferences app would be my personal choice if not for the wood. Another layer, some aging, or something, but it looks to clean and artificial to fit with the gear and corduroy backing.

Honestly, I'm not sure what to say about the Address Book icon. It seems like a straight recolor with some added effects and the tabs removed. This could be a journal. A leather texture (esp for Lion's version) and maybe a latch would go very well. Well done, but you're not stretching the way I know you can.

LAstly, the iTunes icon which is my least preferred or the five. Aside for the anachronism of the vinyl itself, the note and record hark back to older versions of iTunes. Maybe that was intended, and I'm knocking points off for being original and departing from the source? If so, my apologies. Art is never universally well received. If I were to suggest a direction, either a phonograph (perhaps cliché, but well understood) or for the brave—a steampunk engine of the current iTunes round badge|droplet. Something with panels and a bit of rust, to indicate that there's an engine inside the icon? For inspiration, I'd recommend looking at the icon for Daisy Disk.

I just downloaded this and am trying to install it, but it won't load. I'm using candybar to do so. Know a way to make this awesome icon show up on my dock?

So really you don t need candybar to do that. its really easy to do it you self you just have to know what you are doing. Now I'll tell you,

First right-click the System Preferences application and select "show package contents"
Then open the folder "Contents"
Open the folder "Resources"
Find "PrefApp.icns" And create a back-up of it in another folder, just in case.
Replace it with the steampunk icns file and change then name to "PrefApp.icns".

Then just drag out your current system pref dock icon and go into Applications file and now drag the system pref on to your dock. it should now be the steampunk icon on your dock and everywhere else on your hardrive.

hope this helps.
